Drill of the Month
Picture
The triangle drill is an effective means of working on a player’s footwork, moving them around the court in a continuous motion.

  1. The coach will feed a ball to point 1, where the player will make their first shot.
  2. They will then hit an approach shot mid court
  3. After which they will move backwards, (facing forward at all times), to hit a deep third shot behind the baseline, before moving back to the start to begin the circuit again.
  4. The coach can make the drill more advanced in terms of footwork by making the player hit only forehands or backhands.
  5. The drill should also be done in reverse to work on movement in the other direction.

Why choose to train with the RPT?
The RPT was founded and developed in Spain and has now trained more than 50,000 coaches worldwide in the past 20 years. The success of Spanish Tennis over this period of time is unparalleled and it is on this success that the teaching methods and systems of the RPT are based. Spain has not just produced a world-class player "every so often" but consistently over the years and this can only be done if there is a solid coaching programme throughout the country and a system that allows these coaches to develop their own players.
The RPT is integral to this system in Spain, in fact all the private Tennis Academies in Spain use RPT coaches including Sanchez-Casal Academy and the Ferrero Academy, 19 of Spain’s top 20 players are trained by RPT coaches including Tony Nadal, coach to Rafael Nadal, Antonio Cascales coach to Juan Carlos Ferrero and Davis Cup Captain Emilio Sanchez-Vicario. With this background and this success it is not surprising that the RPT is the fastest growing coaching organization in the world today.

International News
Three exciting new projects for the RPT are on the horizon. For the first time the RPT is entering the US market opening an office based at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Naples, Flordia. Luis Mediero will be opening the office in September and will commence a Nationwide Tour delivering the Successful Spanish Systems course throughout 2014.
Adrian will also be opening new offices in Singapore in October starting with a World Tour Course and in India in November starting with the delivering of a Level 1 Certification course and a series of Junior and Adults Camps. So these are very interesting times for the RPT as it continues its International growth, presence and recognition.

Drill of the Month

Picture
'Defence to Attack'

This tennis drill, as the name suggests, looks at turning a running defensive style play into an attacking situation.

  1. First ball is fed deep into the right-handers backhand (shot should be hit back deep crosscourt)
  2. 2nd ball is fed deep into the right-handers forehand (shot should be hit yet again back deep crosscourt)
  3. 3rd ball should be an approach shot to the forehand that is hit down the line
  4. Final ball is a volley cross court at the net, that should be put away, in an attempt to mimic not allowing the other play to reach the volleyed shot.
This tennis drill can be changed around, whereby the balls fed are to the opposite side of the court, e.g. beginning with a fed ball to the right hander’s forehand

To Cool For School!

Lichfield Friary Tennis Club member, Hussian Palejwala who recently attended a RPT Community Coach Course, achieved a fantastic tennis feat at the Lichfield Friary Tennis Club championships.

Firstly playing the under 17 boys final, he found himself 9-6 down, but went on to win 3 match points and won 11-9, winning the last 5 points of the match!

After a short break, and in temperatures of 30 degrees, he then proceeded to compete in the finals of the under 14 boys. In the final tie-break set, to everyone's astonishment he saved 6 match points, pulling him self up from 9-3, going on again to win the match, 11 points to 9!

A truly remarkable achievement, given he was on court for 5 hours, in the incredible heat - thats what you could call "staying cool under pressure"!

The RPT would like to congratulate Hussain's achievement, well done!

Drill of the Month

Picture

'Spanish Cross'

Spanish Cross is a fast paced, tennis drill that covers a range of shots.

In this private-lesson tennis drill the coach is just inside the service line. The player is on the T, at the service line. The coach will feed balls shown in the order below (using a right-handed player as an example).

First ball deep into the back-hand (play a defensive cross-court shot deep).
  1. 2nd ball short into the forehand (play attacking)
  2. 3rd play deep into the forehand (defensive again)
  3. 4th ball short into backhand (attacking shot)
After the four shots the player should return to the original position to start the drill sequence again.
This drill can be modified to go to the forehand side first, then into a short attacking backhand and so on.

Inspiring minds through Tennis
Last month the RPT and Penns Tennis Club were visited by the BBC, Graffiti Artist Dan Newso and 90 local school children who took part in an exciting activity day by organised by Urban Tennis Passport. Below are a selection of shots from the day, please click here to view the full gallery on the RPT website.
" "It's really important we have an attractive offer at the entry point so we can bring kids into our sport in a fun and engaging way," said Oliver Scadgell, the LTA's head of competitions and programmes.

"The more kids we get in, the more likely they are to progress through and maybe become the next Andy Murrays or Laura Robsons."

There are countless other initiatives being used by the LTA to get people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds involved, with a significant emphasis on changing perceptions of tennis.

One example is the Urban Tennis Passport  scheme in Birmingham, launched by coaches James Keatley and Paul Bayliss. "

Drill of the Month
Picture
'Back and Fourth'

This is a fun warm-up game to start a training session off, and the best thing is you can do it with 3-10 players on a court.

  1. The coach will feed balls to two players standing on the baseline on either side of the centre line.
  2. The first ball will be fed for a baseline groundstroke to each individual player. The second ball will be a short approach shot that they should hit around the service line.
  3. If a player hits both these shots in, they then have to run backwards facing forward at all times, until they reach the back fence, which they must touch.
  4. Once they touch the back fence they continue the same two-shot sequence from the original baseline position.
  5. Once a mistake is made the player will go to the back of the line on their side of the court, and the next player in line will line up.
  6. As its a warm up game the coach should progressively make the shots harder (and by also making harder targets for advanced players such as down the line shots only). This will ensure that players are rotated often and players are not warming down at the back of the court.
To improve the warm up and keep the blood flowing for all players, particularly with large groups, the coach can put footwork drills or skipping ropes at the back of the court, out of the way, for those players who are waiting in line.

Drill of the Month
'Bounce Court'

Picture
  1. Each player covers both service boxes on their end of the court.
  2. Points are played out by hitting the ball first into your end of the court (into one of the player’s service boxes) and bouncing it over the net into the one of the opponents service boxes.
  3. If the ball goes into the net, or bounces outside the service boxes, the point is awarded to the opposition.
  4. The player on the opposite side then hits back, first bouncing the ball into their service boxes, over the net and into their opponents service boxes. This continues as the rally goes on, with the point being lost to the player who isn’t able to bounce the ball into one of their service boxes first and then into their one of their opponents service boxes.
  5. Players can play first to 10 points, or whatever the coach feels best.

Drill of the Month
'Rob The Nest'
Picture
  1. Divide children into even teams and place a racquet with 7 balls in the team’s base (marked out with tennis cones) for each team, with another racquet in the middle with 11 balls.
  2. When the game starts players will take balls from either the middle or the oppositions racquets.
  3. If a player takes from the other team, they can be tagged in the opposition base area. If this happens they will have to stay trapped in the opposition’s base and can only be tagged out by a teammate who also can be tagged by an opposition player as well.
  4. After 5 minutes the team with the most balls back on their team’s racquet wins. The game can also be lost if all the players in one team are tagged in the opposition base area and therefore stay trapped in the opposition’s base.

Game, Set and Match between
Club and Coach

By Stephen Lownsbrough, Blacks Solicitors

With the tennis industry becoming increasingly commercial, greater emphasis   needs to be placed on fostering healthy club-coach relationships. Research shows the most successful tennis facilities are those where there is a strong mutual respect between club and coach with the coach placing themselves at the heart of club activities. At the same time coaches need to be able to operate a successful business and as professional business people, be appropriately remunerated for their services.

International News

The RPT continues to grow and flourish in Latin America. Luis Mediero has started a series of regular trips to Mexico and surrounding countries running courses every month, as well as recently being the key speaker at the RPT Latin America conference, together with Emilio Sanchez Vicario and Dominic Conde. The conference was tied into the ATP event and not only was the conference and all our courses sold out with the ATP tour event was also a complete sell out on every day! This confirms the growth in interest and participation in the country. The RPT is now the leading coach education provider in this part of the world.

The RPT is proud to be an official partner with Tennis Tots, the UK's leading tennis play and coaching programme for children aged 2-6 years of age.

To learn more about Tennis Tots and why the programme is proving so popular across the UK watch this video: https://vimeo.com/62090105 or visit the website at www.tennis-tots.co.uk to learn more about how you can earn a full time income running a Tennis Tots franchise.
Because of the demand for franchises across the UK Tennis Tots are now holding discovery days for potential franchisees to learn more about the programme. The Discovery day will give you the opportunity to find out more about the franchise in an informal, no-obligation setting.

During the Discovery Day we will explain the operation of the business, the products and services we  provide, the training and support systems, the financial investment and how you can turnover up to £50,000 a year running a Tennis Tots franchise. There will also be an opportunity to meet some existing franchisees within the network.
Follow the link for more details about the next Discovery Day, on April 30th, Leeds.

Drill of the Month

Mini Tennis

Picture
Mini Tennis is a great warm-up drill that allows players to get a feel for the ball, practising their correct technique while working on the timing of their shots before they go back and start hitting full-court.

This is a good drill for practising top-spin. No slices should be allowed during this drill.
