RPT CONFERENCE 2009
TECHNIQUE, PASSION, SIMPLICITY
These were the 3 key words from the RPT National Conference held recently at the National Tennis Centre.
The 3 speakers were:
Toni Colom whose insights into working with Rafael Nadal for the past 14 years was fantastic. Not just t
o see the on court practices that he uses with Rafa but the stories behind the player, the training, the family, discipline, how they built his character and what makes him the player that he is today. Toni also explained how they have prepared Rafa for the ATP Masters in London both on and off court.
One of the real insights though was when Toni got his mobile phone and read a text from British Number 3 asking for his help to be able to improve his game and move up the world rankings. A text that Toni replied to and starts working with James from next week both in London and then moving to Spain to practice full time.
Luis Mediero the founder President of the RPT was as inspirational as ever speaking as always from the heart. The on court teaching material was extremely practical, thorough yet simple and dynamic providing coaches with information and a system that they will be able to use with their players at all levels. Asked what he thought of the mini-tennis teaching structure and the play and stay initiative he was not impressed with either. He believes that a players development should be determined by the player, the family and the coaching team involved and that development is key.
This process should not be controlled by the Federations who have after all never produced a player in any country in the world not just the UK.
Jayne Morley was the Director of Fitness at the Sanchez Casal Academy for almost 5 years and gave a very dynamic presentation showing some of the training methods and excercises that she used to develop the physical base for Arantxa Sanchez, Conchita Martinez and some of the more recent players including Andy Murray. The feedback from the presentation was excellent and due to demand we will be running some one day courses on this topic.
