Whether you want to be a tennis coach working with individuals, teams, specialist groups or organisations, our degree will give you the skills and knowledge required to develop your career in tennis.

This degree equips you with the skills essential to work in the tennis world as a coach or performance specialist. The programme provides you with the opportunity to link theory to practice in a range of settings.

You will learn how to develop a holistic approach to the coaching process and have the opportunity to specialise your coaching to a specific population (mini-tennis, juniors, adults) across the performance spectrum of grass roots to elite performance level. This includes participation sports alongside health and wellbeing activities where coaching roles might not be as formally structured. 
The degree also provides the you with the opportunity to develop additional skills within the area of applied sport science, sport development and Performance. An integrated Personal Development Portfolio enables yo to maximise your learning by personalising your own learning to match your future career ambitions.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
  • A feature of the course will be the practical application of theory to realistic coaching environments and also to develop links to the coaching industry at all levels from community to elite coaches and coach educators. In addition to this, and recognising that coaching is fundamentally a social process involving human interaction, the degree will provide opportunities to study coaching in a variety of contexts and social settings, as well as in a wide range of activities.

  • The content of the tennis contextualised degree course will draw on key coaching principles, including an examination of coaching practice and coaching process. In addition sports science principles will relate psychology and physiology to coaching and performance, while sociological aspects of sport and sports coaching and performance analysis at both a technical and tactical level will be examined.
  • During the course you will cover performance analysis, sports psychology and sociology, coaching sporting elites, sports physiology and coaching procedures and practices. As you progress through the course you will be able to select modules that reflect your interests.
YEAR ONE
In the first year you are introduced to all elements of the coaching process. You will gain an understanding of the link from theory to practice across a range of disciplines including psychology, physiology and performance development.

YEAR TWO
In year two you will establish a strong understanding of the link between theory and practice whilst developing vocationally relevant skills. ​

COACHING QUALIFICATIONS
  • During your first year of study you will be able to complete the RPT Level 1 and 2 courses (or agreed equivalents) leading to RPT National and European Professional Coaching Qualifications
  • In the 2nd year you should complete the RPT Level 3 course leading to the International Professional Coaching Qualification
  • Your 3rd year you will be able to complete the RPT Management course leading to the Director of Tennis Qualifications

If you already hold part or all of these qualifications and can provide proof of experience in coaching you may apply for Recognised Prior Learning and may not be required to undergo this training.
Students graduate upon completion of a Bachelor Thesis.

A limited number of scholarships and bursaries are available for existing coaches and will be agreed on a first come first served basis
UK citizens may also be able to apply for funding through the Student Finance Company.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE
The application forms are processed by Wrexham Glyndwr Univirsity who, together with the RPT will assess your previous experience and determine which entry level to the programme you will start at.

Applications do not need any tennis coaching experience prior to enrolling onto the course but should hold or be at the equivalent level of an ITF International Tennis Number at Level 5 or higher
 
Tennis coaches who already hold RPT, LTA, ITF, USPTA, PTR or National Governing Body qualifications (or agreed equivalents) and can provide proof of experience in tennis coaching and management can also apply for the programme and may be able to move directly to the 2nd year of the qualification.
